McKirdy & Riskin attorneys head faculty of New Jersey Redevelopment Authority Training Institute
Three attorneys from McKirdy & Riskin will be serving on the faculty of the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority’s “Redevelopment Training Institute” on October 4 and 5, 2011. The course will be held at Thomas Edison State College in Trenton. Anthony Della Pelle, CRE, has been selected as the lead instructor, is coordinating the course, and will be presenting lectures on “Redevelopment Gone Right or Wrong” on October 4, and “Property Acquisition, Eminent Domain and Relocation” on October 5. John H. Buonocore will be leading a panel discussion on October 4 entitled “The Area in Need of Redevelopment”, and also presenting a panel with Richard DeAngelis later that day on “Recent Developments in Litigation”. McKirdy & Riskin was recently selected as a top firm in the category of Construction and Real Estate by Super Lawyers Business Edition 2011. Six of McKirdy & Riskin’s nine attorneys were recently selected for inclusion in the 2010 edition of New Jersey Super Lawyers, leading to the firm’s selection as a top firm in the Business Edition. The attorneys included in this edition were John Buonocore, Anthony Della Pelle, Jeffrey Lewis, Edward McKirdy, Thomas Olson, and Harry Riskin.
An arbitration panel has awarded $24 million to the former owners of commuter parking lots and industrial buildings adjacent to the PATH station in Harrison, New Jersey. McKirdy & Riskin’s Richard DeAngelis was quoted in the March 19, 2011 article by Shannon Mullen and William Westhoven in the Daily Record, “Tax Assessment Appeals on the Rise.”
Mr. DeAngelis commented on the high volume of property tax appeals which have been filed in recent years, and in particular on the continued rise in filed appeals in advance of this year’s April 1, 2011 filing deadline. In highlighting the importance of evaluating the viability of a tax appeal before filing, Mr. DeAngelis stated: “Before I even take a client, I analyze the situation to see if they have a case.”

A Morris County jury awarded the owner of the former Traveler’s Diner in Dover $3.75 million on March 15, 2011, as just compensation for the taking of its diner property in 2008 in connection with a new bridge at the intersection of Routes 46 and 15 by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. McKirdy & Riskin’s Jack Buonocore served as trial counsel to the owner, and was quoted in articles in the Star-Ledger and Daily Record about the trial. NJDOT had originally offered less than $2 million for the property, but the jury disagreed and awarded the exact sum sought by the owner.

On February 28, 2011, McKirdy & Riskin’s Thomas Olson and Richard DeAngelis served as panelists at the Morris County Bar Association’s Real Estate Tax Appeal seminar which was held at the Morris County Courthouse. Tom provided an overview of the tax appeal process to the attorneys in the audience, while Rich discussed recent case law developments in the property tax field.
On February 18, 2011, McKirdy & Riskin’s Anthony F. DellaPelle participated as a member of the faculty on two separate panels at the ALI-ABA annual conference on eminent domain law in Coral Gables, Florida. Mr. Della Pelle first served as a member of a panel entitled “The ‘Social’ Lawyer: New Media Strategies for Marketing Your Eminent Domain Practice,” addressing how eminent domain attorneys can use social media for their businesses or simply to keep up on the latest cases. Later that day, he moderated and also served on a second panel, entitled “Diamonds in the Rough: Ways to Handle the Valuation of Difficult Properties”.
